Today’s turmoil in the housing market has made it more appealing than ever for many renters to consider purchasing their first home.
Whatever your situation, the housing market is ripe for first time home buyers. The Federal HomeBuyer Credit is available for homes put under contract by April 30th, 2010 and closed by June 30, 2010.
Interest rates remain low. The market is full of homes that are aggressively priced. If your children approach you for assistance, perhaps it is a valid consideration. To put the best face on a listing and appeal to buyers who follow feng shui principles, keep these tips in mind.
1. Pay special attention to the front door, which is considered the “mouth of chi” (chi is the “life force” of all things) and one of the most powerful aspects of the entire property. Abundance, blessings, opportunities, and good fortune enter through the front door. It’s also the first impression buyers have of how well the sellers have taken care of the rest of the property. Make sure the area around the front door is swept clean, free of cobwebs and clutter. Make sure all lighting is straight and properly hung. Better yet, light the path leading up to the front door to create an inviting atmosphere.
2. Chi energy can be flushed away wherever there are drains in the home. To keep the good forces of a home in, always keep the toilet seats down and close the doors to bathrooms.
3. The master bed should be in a place of honor, power, and protection, which is farthest from and facing toward the entryway of the room. It’s even better if you can place the bed diagonally in the farthest corner. Paint the room in colors that promote serenity, relaxation, and romance, such as soft tones of green, blue, and lavender.
4. The dining room symbolizes the energy and power of family togetherness. Make sure the table is clear and uncluttered during showings. Use an attractive tablecloth to enhance the look of the table while also softening sharp corners.
5. The windows are considered to be the eyes of the home. Getting the windows professionally cleaned will make the home sparkle and ensure that the view will be optimally displayed.

Every year about 12,500 people are treated for falls, cuts, and shocks related to Holiday decorating! Don’t become a statistic. Keep safety in mind at all times. Here are some other basics to remember:
- Candles: Only use them when you’re in the room; candles start over 11,000 fires every year. Don’t use near trees or evergreens as these burn easily.
- Artificial Trees: Make sure you only buy “fire resistant” trees. They’ll still burn, but are much less likely to catch fire and if they do, they extinguish more easily.
- Live Trees: Make sure it’s fresh. Set it up away from radiators, fireplaces, and other heat sources. Make sure it’s always got lots of water so it doesn’t dry out. Don’t let it block doorways or traffic flow.
- Lights: Use fused plug lights. Don’t attach more than 3 strands of lights to a single extension cord. NEVER use electric lights on a metallic tree. Turn them off when you leave home.
- Fireplaces: Don’t burn wrapping paper in fireplaces, they can cause flash fires.

Ann Arbor Real Estate Tip: Top Ten Ways to Protect Your Home During the Holidays
Every year we hear news stories about families whose homes are broken into during the holidays. We’ve put together our Top Ten list of helpful reminders:
- Move large gifts into the house during off or evening hours if possible.
- Don’t throw those big screen TV or Playstation boxes away at the curbside after the holidays.
- If traveling, have neighbors pick up mail, flyers and papers.
- Make sure you make arrangements for snow removal so it doesn’t look vacant if you’re gone.
- Don’t pile presents up beneath the tree so they’re visible from the street.
- Check your doors and windows and make sure they’re secure.
- Remove spare keys from the outside under mats and in planters, etc.
- Trim trees and bushes so that there is nowhere for burglars to hide.
- Set your lights on timers.
- If you have a security system, USE it.
